Schauer Announces School Safety Grant for Lenawee County
Department of Justice ‘Secure Our Schools’ grant will help create safer learning environment for local students
WASHINGTON,
Oct 5, 2009 -
Today Congressman Mark Schauer announced a grant through the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) to enhance school safety in Lenawee County schools. The $104,028 grant was awarded to the Lenawee County Sheriff Department and Lenawee County Intermediate School District (ISD) under COPS’ Secure Our Schools (SOS) program, which provides funds to improve security in schools and on school grounds.
“Today’s students represent tomorrow’s workforce,” said Schauer. “By strengthening security measures at local schools, we can offer Lenawee County students a safer learning environment where they can hone their skills and prepare for jobs of the future.”
The Secure Our Schools program will allow the Lenawee Sheriff Department and Lenawee ISD to improve security systems at Sand Creek Community Schools, Britton-Macon Community Schools, Clinton Community Schools, and Lenawee ISD buildings. Lenawee County was one of just three Michigan communities to receive funding under the 2009 SOS program.
“The Lenawee Intermediate School District appreciates the support of the United States Department of Justice and the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Department in our efforts to ensure that participating Lenawee County schools remain safe environments for our students and faculty,” said Lenawee Intermediate School District Superintendent Steve Krusich.
Each SOS grant is two years in duration, and provides a maximum federal share of $500,000. For additional information about the COPS Secure Our Schools program, visit the COPS website at www.cops.usdoj.gov. The complete SOS Program 2009 Grant Recipient List is available online.
